This was a typographic installation project that sadly didn’t materialise this year for the ALTSUMMIT. It would’ve been my first one abroad too! But hey ho, sometime things just don’t always go the way you hoped and you keep going until it does. Anyway I thought I’d share it here as a way of keeping it alive and because it means a lot to me.
'Breaking Barriers' is about the strength and courage of women who "break free" from cultural and societal traditions, expectations and stereotypes in pursuit of their dreams. It stems from my own personal identity and experiences - Having been brought up in an Indian society where the creative realm wasn’t typically considered as a “career”, I naturally conditioned myself into thinking that training to be an architect was the closest to thing to creativity that was culturally and socially approved. Well over a decade later, completely disillusioned by my career choice and the direction it was leading, I made the big plunge into forging my very own creative path as a graphic artist. This was the start of a very painful, albeit empowering, journey of ‘breaking free’ from all societal and cultural norms, expectations and metrics that once defined me.
So while this may never have hit the walls of California, I want it to be a reminder to all of you here, on similar roads to me, of the courage it took/takes to go down a route that completely redefines us. This is our self-affirmation, so to speak.
What do you think of it? Would you like to see it on a wall somewhere? If you know a way to help, do let me know!
